NANFA Grants

It is our pleasure at NANFA to offer two Grant Programs, supporting Education, Conservation and Research of our Native Fishes.

The Gerald C. Corcoran Education Grant

The award was established in memory of past NANFA President Gerald C. Corcoran, who stressed public education regarding the continent's native fishes. Up to $1000 for Environmental Education Projects are Awarded Each Year

NANFA Conservation Research Grant

Since 2001 NANFA has funded the Conservation Reaserch Grant, focusing on supporting research relating to the conservation of North America's indigenous fish fauna, particularly those that are threatend or endangered. The Conservation Research Grant could be awarded to someone in academia, a conservation group, or to an independent researcher.

The NANFA John Bondus Grant

Since 2015 NANFA has established the NANFA John Bondus Grant. The grant is designed to support organizations that are working to conserve native fish populations, habitats, and knowldege. This grant is intended to support current projects or ongoing efforts.

Featured Funded Projects

Freshwater Fishes of North America

During the 2012 NANFA Research Grant application process, each member of the Grant Review Committee found one particular proposal to be evaluated separately from the other proposals. The proposal was made by two very prolific authors in North American fish work, Brooks Burr and Melvin Warren, who are editing a three volume book set entitled “Freshwater Fishes of North America”

Grant Program History

The Grant Program began in 2000 as an Education and Conservation Grant, when NANFA’s Board of Directors originally approved a total of $500 for the award. The Grant was then generously matched by the family members of past NANFA President Gerald C. Corcoran donated $500 to match the award, bringing the total to $1000.

In 2001, NANFA again found it within its financial means to begin an additional Grant Program, this time focusing on funding Research to aid the conservation of North America’s native fishes, particularly those that are threatened or endangered. In 2015, NANFA further expanded its grant program with the establishment of the NANFA John Bondhus Grant.
