Studying and documenting the captive husbandry of North American fishes can provide information about a species' life history that is otherwise lacking in the scientific record, or difficult to study under natural conditions.
Captive husbandry of fishes acquaints people with organisms they might otherwise never see alive or know existed, and affords people an opportunity to witness and appreciate their behaviors (feeding, breeding, parental care, etc.). Such acquaintance is a vital step in fostering environmental awareness and promoting a conservation ethic.
NANFA and it's members bring public awareness through regional and national meetings, publications, electronic media, aquarium hobbies, and more.
NANFA is run solely by volunteers that love North American Native Fish. There are many opportunities to volunteer such as content contributors, forum moderators, event organizers, photographers, website managers, artists, and much more.
Public awareness is key to protecting and preserving North American native fish. Through NANFA members host regional events, meetings, and numerous opportunities to explore your local waterways.
NANFA relies on it's members to support the organization and keep it running. By becoming a member you get access to our quarterly journal and exclusive resources related to native fish.
